This week, Muyumbu teen mothers, supported by Nsanga Initiative, who had been learning tailoring, started a one-month internship in different nearby sewing workshops.

Nsanga Initiative, started its activities in October 2022, with 20 teen mothers in Muyumbu sector, Rwamagana District.

Initially, 11 girls chose to learn tailoring, one (1) chose to learn hairdressing, four (4) girls chose to go back to regular schools and the other three (3) decided to start small businesses while one (1) had finished learning sewing and needed a machine to start using the skills he had acquired. So, out of these 11 teen mothers, 10 finished the training program in May 2023, after which they were given internships in the nearest tailoring workshops.

By the time they were in the middle of the second term, one of the teen mothers showed lack of interest, being absent most of the days and later dropped out. The administration of Nsanga informed the local authorities, who also visited her. They informed Nsanga Initiative that this girl apparently refuses to study, and that she even developed bad beahaviour as her neigbors reported.

“I am happy that I am about to graduate from this program. I will directly start using the skills acquired, in order to improve my life and the one of my baby,” said IGIHOZO Emelyne, one of the teen mothers undergoing the internship.

Kamanzi Jean Pierre, one of the professional tailors supervising them told Nsanga Initiative that, the girls seem to be well educated and they understand and take what they are told quickly and seriously, which is promising for their job market life.

The duration of internship will be one month, after which they will receive their certificate of completion approved by Rwanda TVET Board.
